Max Factor lipstick

Calendar Unknown Map pin United Kingdom Monica Cox, School of Geographical Sciences cleaner, on behalf of her mother

Monica’s mother gave her this lipstick, which was acquired in Bristol, United Kingdom, likely in the 1970s – its origins, Monica believes, are the 1950s. It was likely never worn, but has been carried and stored by Monica – it now finds a new home in the teaching store, and will inform Dr Merle Patchett’s research into glamour and geographies of fashion and style. As the lipstick came with no labelling it is currently being analysed by organic chemists in the University of Bristol’s Chemistry Department to see what the product it is made out of and possibly identify where those materials and pigments originate from. In the United States, the requirement for ingredient labeling on makeup became mandatory for products labeled after November 30, 1976. In the European Union, the current requirement is based on EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, which came into effect in 2013 in the UK. This regulation mandates that cosmetic products must have a label listing ingredients for safety purposes, alongside other information such as the manufacturer’s address, contents, and warnings.
