Core liner from expedition to Gibraltar Strait
2024 Gibraltar Strait and Bristol, United Kingdom Professor Rachel FleckerPlastic tube. The tube is a core liner used for recovering and storing sediments from beneath the sea floor. The logo etched onto its surface for IODP Expedition 401: Mediterranean Atlantic Gateways. This 2-month long expedition drilled on either side of the Gibraltar Strait (December 2023-February 2024) and recovered climate archives from 8-4 million years ago. The decorated polystyrene beakers have been shrunk by sending them to the bottom of the sea at one of the drilling sites, where the pressure is much higher than at surface.
