Anatomical model of human placenta
Purchased in 2024 India Professor Maria FanninPVC, satin twisted cord. Human placental models are used in medical and midwifery education to demonstrate the structural features of the placenta and umbilical cord, organs that move nutrients to and waste from developing foetus during pregnancy. The placenta is a useful geographical object for thinking about the mobility of biological resources as bodily materials are central to the political economies of healthcare and biotechnology. The placentas also invites reflection on the meanings attached to body parts: placentas may be invested with spiritual and symbolic value but also viewed with disgust and fear.
